Thursday Oct. 29

Happy Halloween!

We started off the day with our very first baby visits for Roots of Empathy!  Thompson and Nixon were so curious of all of us on the screen.  We had many thoughtful questions about our babies.  We can't wait to tell you what they can do.

In math, we worked on subitizing, counting on and number recognition.  Ask me about the game Pumpkin Bump and how we used numbers to created Halloween inspired pictures.

We all had a special treat of having Mrs. Kinsman read us a spooky story.  Ask me about the book that she read.

In preparation for the Remembrance Day assembly, we asking that all the students try to wear black on Monday Nov. 2.  If your child does not have black, just have them try and wear darker colours that day.  Also,  if they are in Sparks, Brownies or Beaver Scouts, they are welcome to wear their uniforms on Monday.

Please have a fun and safe weekend!

 Hello Friends and Family,

Today in Math we learned about what the word "Equal" means.  We read the story Equal Schmequal.  Ask me what the problem in the story was, and how it was solved!

We learned that the equals sign in an equation is like a scale, and it means balance.   We saw on a scale that that whatever happens on one side of the equals sign needs to happen on the other side so that the equation is balanced.  Many of us even figured out that if the yellow pattern block on the right is equal to 10, then one red pattern block must equal 5.

At home challenge problem:

If the yellow pattern block = 6, what do all the other pieces equal?

We practiced the concept of equality adding shapes instead of numbers (this is called "variables").  Some of us even challenged ourselves to make equivalent equations.  We are going to keep practicing this for the next couple weeks.

A few groups presented their story retelling today too!  They did a great job.

A reminder that we will be celebrating Halloween tomorrow, and that we are welcome to wear our costumes to school. Please make sure it's a costume that I can take off/put on by myself in case I need to use the bathroom or take pieces off of it to go outside.  I need to be able to wear my mask on with it, so please no other masks.  I can definitely wear hats, crowns etc. on my head!  If my costume has a prop like a wand or broomstick, I need to leave it at home because it would get in the way of writing and stuff.   Lastly I need to be able to wear shoes with my costume, just in case of a Fire Drill!

Thanks for reading!

Tuesday Oct. 27

Hello Wild Rose and Mountain View Families!

While on our walk with Blackfoot Elder, Sa'a Ko Ko To last week, we took a keen interest in learning more about the bison.  We learned how to sketch a bison and will be labelling the different parts.  Ask me about how the Blackfoot people used all of the different body parts of the bison.

Ask me about the Superstar Vowels that we have learned and why we call them superstars.  We are continuing to work on all the different ways to represent numbers.  Ask me all of the ways that I can show numbers.

A reminder that students can wear their Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, October 29.

Mrs. S, our interim school librarian, met with Wild Rose students today to learn how to borrow books from our learning commons.  In order to borrow books, you will need to access the elibrary through Eric Harvie School website(under Learning Commons/Library).  Their CBE student number can be found in Powerschool and they are to use their Google password.  Please see the information on yesterday's blog for further instructions.

Have a great night!

 Hello Friends and Family,

Due to limitations of book borrowing, the traditional home reading program is not possible this year.  However we have signed all our students up for Epic! books again this year so that your child has access to choosing their own books.  Last year (depending on your class) some books may have been assigned as Google Classroom assignments, but unless your child is self-isolating we will not be using it for this function, rather Epic! books will be a substitute for taking physical books home.  Students may explore and read books of their choosing, which is a great way to encourage a love for reading.

To login to your Epic! books account, please go to www.getepic.com.  Click "Class Code" at the top right, and enter the following class code, depending on your class:

Wild Rose:  jak3498

Mountain View:  czm4271

Then click on your name, and start reading!

Happy Reading!

Thursday, Oct. 22

 Hello Friends and Family,

For the last few days we have been learning about how living things survive the winter season.  Ask me about the three different ways animals survive, and which animals do what.  We have also been learning about Bison, and how they have adapted to survive the prairies, and why they were important to the Blackfoot People.

We met our our Blackfoot Elder, Sa'a Ko Ko To at the Bison statue in the Coulee, and he taught us more about the Bison today and how the Blackfoot peoples of the past used Bison to survive.  We also learned what Bison are called in Blackfoot (I' ni) Ask me what I learned!

We also had our first Roots of Empathy lesson with Mrs. Martens today!  Ask me if I remember our babies' names (Thompson and Nixon). Today's lesson was about making predictions about what milestones our babies might be at.

Thanks for reading!

Wed. Oct 21

 Hello Friends and Family,

Today was official "Take Me Outside Day", so to celebrate we went outside for Gym and played snow soccer!

We learned about how to pick a "Good Fit" book!  A Good Fit book is a book that is good for me.  We learned that everyone reads different books because we all read differently and are interested in different types of books.  We talked about how reading is like any other skill like swimming or riding a bike, where we all learn at different speed and we all start by learning the basics, so it's important we read a book that is a good fit so we can all practice our individual skills.  We use the acronym "IPICK" to help us remember what to think about when we pick a book.  See if I remember what the steps are:

As a reminder, we will be going to the Coulee tomorrow despite the forecast.   Please make sure I am dressed properly for the weather.  In particular, I need to be wearing snowpants because we will be sitting outside to listen to stories of the land.

Thanks for Reading!

Tuesday Oct. 20

 Hello Families!

Today, we continued working on the 3 Ways to Read a Book.  A couple more groups were able to share our retelling of our wordless picture book.  Ask me about the letter sounds we learned today. In math, we practiced our number sense skills and played "Face-Off."  Ask me how to play and we can play it together!

Important!

On Thursday afternoon (Oct. 22), we will be going for a walk in the Coulee with Indigenous Elder Sa'a Ko Ko To.  It is supposed to be cold and snowy, so please dress for the weather.

Students will be able to dress up for Halloween on Thursday, October 29, as Friday is a PD day.  Just as a friendly reminder no weapons are to be brought or worn with their costume.

Monday, Oct 19

 Hello Friends and Family,

Today we practiced another way to read a book - Read the Pictures!  As a class we read a wordless picture book called "A Ball for Daisy",  and told the story using the pictures.  Wordless picture books can convey a lot of emotion through illustration, and makes us think about what is happening in the story.  I can practice a lot of comprehension strategies this way, such as making connections, using picture clues, predicting, and thinking about character motivations.  They even help us better understand the elements of a story even without words.  We practiced reading the pictures with our table groups.   Some groups got to then retell the stories to the class.  Ask me about my story and what it's called!

Thanks for Reading!

Friday, Oct. 16

 Hello Friends and Family,

We had a great morning in the Coulee!  I collected some observations while we were in my "no one but you" spot.  I brought my observations home, so remind me to show you my work and ask me what I observed!  We also did a "full body scan" while we were on the tail end of our walk to see what parts of our bodies felt cold.  Ask me what felt cold to me, and what I should bring next week when we go again.

Please remember to accept your invitation for our Google Classroom before Monday.  You will need to login to your Gmail account to see this invitation.  If you cannot remember your password, please e-mail Ms. Low or Mrs. Day and we can send you a new one.

Have a great weekend!
